From Confusion to Confidence: The Journey That Sparked The Elegance of Travel
When my husband was asked by his employer to travel to their world headquarters in The Netherlands, excitement quickly turned into anxiety. He had never been to Europe before, and navigating a foreign country — language, trains, airport signage — was daunting. I suggested he turn to YouTube to study the journey ahead, from touchdown at Amsterdam Schiphol to the two-hour train ride to a small town called Boxmeer.
He dove into hours of videos, watching walk-throughs of Amsterdam’s sprawling airport, locating the train station tucked inside, learning how to buy and activate a Dutch train ticket (an essential step many travelers miss). He even mapped out the multiple train changes en route to Boxmeer. When the time came, it was as if he had already been there. Every step, every turn felt familiar. His boss, who hadn’t done the same prep, admitted he would have been completely overwhelmed without my husband’s foresight.
But not everything went smoothly. After a long international flight, they arrived at their tiny hotel — locked doors, a dark lobby, and instructions in Dutch. Twenty cold minutes later, someone finally let them in. The hotel was being converted into senior housing the following week. The single-person elevator and cramped rooms felt like something out of a thriller film. My husband was exhausted and ready to come home.
Then came redemption: the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel. Expecting the typical airport stay, he was blown away. The hotel, seamlessly connected to the terminal, felt more like a luxury resort than a layover. The marble-finished lobby, spa-like shower with muscle-soothing jets, and a dinner at Stripes Restaurant that rivaled a Michelin experience completely transformed his final night.
It was in that moment — the contrast between stress and serenity — that inspiration struck. How many travelers experience chaos instead of comfort simply because they didn’t know where to begin? That trip became the catalyst for launching The Elegance of Travel, our luxury travel design firm.
